Dream Date With Danny: by Matthew Amster-Burton from MSN Music Central Australian rockers Silverchair have more going for them than mere youthful energy. They've got Daniel Johns. The handsome and talented Johns is the undisputed leader of Silverchair — he sings, plays guitar, and writes all the songs. His vocal range belies his 17 years, and he is equally comfortable crooning like Eddie Vedder and screaming like Kurt Cobain. Not bad for a guy who says he'd be just as happy at the beach or watching TV. Rhythm section Chris Joannou (bass) and Ben Gillies (drums) do their part ably, but this is clearly Johns' show. For more detail on Neil's life in the outback and the Warumpi Band, his book "Sing For Me Countryman" (1993 Hodder & Stoughton) is highly recommended. Andrew McMillan's "Strict Rules" (1988 Hodder & Stoughton), the story of the Blackfella/Whitefella tour with Midnight Oil in 1986 is also recommended reading.

By 1986, Midnight Oil's principal songwriters - Jim Moginie, Peter Garrett and Rob Hirst - had addressed many of the most important issues confronting the world in the late 20th century. They had written songs about the folly of war and the destructive nature of capitalism, exploitation and greed. They had cried out for the natural environments laid waste by progress - and they had touched on many of the great stories of Australia's brief but colorful history of white settlement. Now they turned their attention to the plight of Australia's own indigenous people. ![]() Initially, Midnight Oil wrote a song, "Dead Heart," for release as a single and for use in a documentary being made on the Australian Aborigines. The band then undertook an extensive tour - with Aboriginal outfit the Warumpi Band - of some of the country's most remote Aboriginal settlements. The Black Fella White Fella Tour, in July 1986, exposed Midnight Oil to the realities of modern Aboriginal life. 200 years of white settlement in Australia has seen all manner of atrocity visited upon the country's original owners - and today's survivors fight to maintain their ancient traditions in an atmosphere tainted by poverty, disease and alcoholism. |

![]() | Singer-songwriter Mark Anthony Abbott may be a newcomer to the country music scene but his background stands him in good stead for his late-chosen career. Consider this ... Mark has been a strapper, jockey, shearer, wool presser, drover, and a cook for a team of sheep-mulesers in the Northern Territory. He has hitch-hiked around Australia, lived with a family of Aboriginals outside Blackall & drove horses from town to town on agistment. He was a street kid in Brisbane before that term was even thought of. What better grounding could anyone have to become a storyteller through writing songs about the many and varied aspects of life he has witnessed. |
